Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad initially Known as Andhra Pradesh Open University which was established through an Act of A.P. State legislature 1982.
It was inaugurated by the then President of India, Late Sri Gyani zail Singh on 26 August, 1982. Subsequently, the university was renamed as Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University by the Government of A.P. in memory of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Centenary celebrations in the year 1991.
a) To provide educational opportunities to those who could not take advantage of conventional institutions of Higher Learning.
b) To provide equality of educational opportunities at higher educational of the large segments of the population, including those in employment, women(including housewives) and adults who wish to upgrade their education or acquire knowledge in various fields through distance education.
c) To provide flexibility with regard to eligibility for enrolment, age of entry, choice of courses, methods of learning, conduct of examination and operation of the programmes.
d) To complement the programmes of the existing universities in the state of Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh state in the field of higher learning, so as to maintain the highest standards on par with those of the best universities in the country.
e) T promote integration within the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh through its policies and programmes.
f) To offer degree courses and non-degree certificate courses for the benefit of the working population in various fields and for the benefit of those who wish to enrich their lives by studying subjects of culture and aesthestic value.
g) To make provision for research, advancement and dissemination of knowledge.
h) To serve as a source of continuing education, consultancy and to provide equal access to knowledge and higher education.
The University Grants Commission, New Delhi also admitted this University for assistance under section12-B of the U.G.C. Act vide U.G.C letter 40 F5-7182 (CPP) Dt.12-05-1986.
The University serves the objective of democratization of higher education and the ideals of continuing education.
It is a boon to those who for one reason or other have not been able to study at a college or a University although they are keen on improving their educational qualifications. “Education for all” being the motto Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University brings the benefits of higher education to a
large number of people, including employees, adults, women, house wives and businessmen who are interested in higher learning.
The University offers certificate, Diploma, degree, B.Ed, Post graduate and M.Phil, Ph.D. Programmes through distance mode. All the programmes are recognised by UGC and Distance education Bureau (DEB), New Delhi.
The University makes use of multimedia instructional components such as audio-visual programmes (Radio, Television, Audio cassettes & Video cassettes), in addition to print material and contact –cum-counselling classes.
The study centre will function on all week days except Monday and Tuesday following second Saturday and other public holidays. The counselling classes are arranged at the study centres on Sundays.
The University is following Choice Based Credit System for the U.G. Programme from the academic year 2017-18 with 40 papers.
